Małopolska Garden of the Arts, Kraków

The Małopolska Garden of the Arts is a space belonging to the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Krakow.  It is located on the site of former popular theatres and technical studios. This former skating rink and riding arena was refashioned into the People's Theatre in 1906. Later, there were the City Folk Theatre, the General City Theatre, the City Opera House and Operetta, the New Operetta, the New Popular Theatre, and the Revue Theatres: Gong, Pantera, Wodewil. Since 1931, the building has served as J. Słowacki Theatre's storeroom for sets and props. During the war, the Germans mainly used the building for storage, and starting in 1946, it housed the stage design studios of the J. Słowacki Theatre (they were also used by the Stary Theatre). Due to its poor condition, the building needed a general renovation or complete revitalisation. Finally, it was decided to reconstruct the building according to the winning design by K. Ingarden and J. Ewy Architekci LLC. The work was carried out from 2012 to 2012. A modern cultural building was created – the Małopolska Garden of the Arts, whose spectacular five-story construction combines historical and modern elements. Behind the glass facade, you can see a reconstructed fragment of the wall of the old building.
