The Meaning of the Renaissance, Szymbark Castle

The representative and residential part of the castle is located on the upper floor that consists of two large rooms, called antechambers, above the hallway and a representative Great Chamber. The residential part was supplemented by alcove chambers with entrances in the corners of these rooms. An antechamber is a room for courtiers that precedes the state room. It currently serves as a foyer where art exhibitions are displayed. The coffered ceiling is a contemporary reconstruction while the Renaissance door portals leading to the Great Chamber are partly original. Two display cabinets contain tableware from the 19th and 20th centuries, including a dinnerware set with the initials FR, the monogram that used to belong to Feliks Rogoyski, the former owner of the manor. The Great Chamber modelled upon other rooms of that type was the ‘heart’ of the Gładysz family castle; this is where guests were entertained, debates were held and lavish feasts were organised. A gallery of portraits by masters of the Renaissance and complete outfits reconstructed on the basis of these portraits are a part of the ‘Meaning of the Renaissance’ exhibition. In our day, concerts and conferences take place here.
