Anna Przemyska

Anna Przemyska (1924–1995) came from Orawka but her career took her to Warsaw. She often visited her family though: Sabina and Jan Obyrtacz. She not only stayed in their home (called Villa Sabina after her mother) but also walked a lot in the village and all over Orawa, meeting the inhabitants among whom she had a lot of friends. She respected the highlanders of Orawa who in turn valued her openness to other people.

Anna Przemyska was a poet, a member of the Polish Writers’ Union, the author of songs for children and, during the occupation, she cooperated with the resistance movement. As a member of UAS-HA, she transported letters, press, money and ciphers across the border (and on to Hungary) and participated in the trafficking of resistance fighters. She operated on the route code-named ‘School’ that led through her hometown, she used pseudonyms at the time such as Anka, Aniczka or Marta. For her self-sacrificing underground activities, she was awarded the Silver Cross of Merit with Swords in 1944.
