Balcony, Niepołomice Castle

The meticulously renovated former residence of the Piast and Jagiellonian dynasties offers a unique opportunity to encounter history, nature and art. The Niepołomice Museum occupies the first floor. Visitors are invited to walk around the castle while guides point out the gothic and Renaissance details of the castle and reveal its long history and the legends and facts about the kings who used to stay here. Precious collections are displayed in the old rooms. Memorabilia of the Niepołomice parish church have been gathered for viewing in the castle chapel: royal and papal documents the oldest of which date back to the 14th century, Renaissance liturgical outfits and objects, baroque reliquaries and a collection of 18th century volumes. Art galleries displaying collections of the National Museum in Krakow contain the works of renowned Polish and Western European artists from the turn of the 19th century and monuments from ancient cultures (the oldest ones date back to the 19th century BCE). Hunting rooms display hunting trophies: game animals and birds both from the Niepołomicka Forest and from distant lands such as Siberia, Canada and Africa. One of the castle rooms was transformed into an office of Włodzimierz Puchalski (1909-1979), a renowned Polish wildlife photographer, filmmaker and naturalist, for the display of his work: thousands of negatives and prints, photograms, albums and personal memorabilia – all donated by his family.
