Dziubek’s cottage

Drewniana chałupa kryta gontem i słomą widziana z zewnątrz.

This 19th-century building was relocated from Jabłonka. The characteristic features of the Orava region are visible: a ‘wyżka’ (a utility room on the first floor), ‘przedwysce’ (an overhanging gallery), a hipped, shingled straw roof (a part of the roof is covered with bundles of straw called ‘kicok’). The stone foundation jutting out in front of the front wall was the so-called 'pogródka’ that provided an opportunity to be outside on rainy days without getting wet, and offered shade on hot and sunny days. The building has a hallway in the middle that separates the left wing (four rooms, two of them heated with a stove) and the right wing (consisting of two small unheated rooms). The entire building is grand and spacious, typical for wealthier peasants’ homes. The building used to house the first post office in Orava that had been in operation since the second half of the 19th century. A plank sundial on one of the ‘przedwysce’ pillars is worth noting. In addition to the basic furnishings, the left wing contains an exhibition dedicated to weddings in Orava, arranged as a wedding feast room. In the white room one can see set tables with colourful, painted plates, cups (called ‘siałka’ in Orava), clay jugs and bowls. Everything is decorated with flowers made of tissue paper. Visitors can also see elements of an official festive outfit.
