Kott’s Cottage

The cottage offers a glimpse of the living conditions of a moderately affluent family. Once owned by Franciszek Kott from Zubrzyca Górna, it was built in 1869 and moved to the open-air museum in 1964. Like the manor house, the cottage has a two-storey extension with a ‘wyżka’. Along its wider wall runs a ‘przedwysce’ with carved supports on which flax and underwear were dried. As is customary, it faces south and is covered by a shingled hip roof with smoke vents in the front. The entrance to the hallway is through a beautiful arched doorframe decorated with the rising sun motif. The cubic capacity and size of the building testify to the fact that it was a small and modest home of a ‘gazda’ although its neat proportions and subtle taste are captivating. It is an excellent example of a homestead from the Beskid part of Orawa. Many of them could be found in mountain valleys and distant settlements.
