Cabinet of Curios

The Museum in Chrzanów was established in 1960. Its founders were a married couple, Irena and Mieczysław Mazaraki, after whom the institution is named. Had it not been for their passion, dedication, and persistence, the Museum might never have existed. Mieczysław Mazaraki was the first director of the Museum and Irena its first curator.

In the exhibition room dedicated to them, you can see items connected to the founders of the institution. It includes shells collected by Mieczysław in 1938 and an egg of a white stork, a species to which he devoted his research. Mieczysław's passions included hunting, guns, and other types of weaponry, as shown by the antlers, recurve bow, and pistols. Irena started the collection of porcelain, tinware, and various types of jewellery, among other things. Both were educated as natural scientists, hence the flora and fauna specimens in the room. Some interesting items displayed here: araucarites, remiz nests, mammoth tooth, and tropical shells donated by Irena's students. In turn, Dr. Marian Kuc, a friend of the couple, brought sawfish mouths and a whale's vertebra from his far-away journeys.
