Market Square, Czchów

Rynek w Czchowie

Czchów is the administrative and cultural centre of the gmina (‘county’). It is a picturesque medieval town with a rich history and one of the few towns in Poland with a market square with such a steep slope. The square is surrounded by houses with arcades characteristic of 18th-century architecture, and in the central part of the square is the historical statue of St. Jan Nepomucen and the statue of St. Florian with a Romanesque lion. The slightly sloping market square hides many places of interest and attractions for tourists. Worth seeing: the ‘Kazimierz’ oak tree, the St. Kinga town fountain, and the plaque commemorating the 800th anniversary of the town of Czchów. The market square was laid out in the mid-14th century when the town was founded. It used to be a place where weekly fairs were held. Much later, the town hall was built on the square and stood until the end of the 18th century. Near the market square is military cemetery No. 297, where soldiers of the Austrian and Russian armies who died during World War I are buried. In the Czchów gmina, you can spend your time actively, e.g., by choosing one of the three bicycle paths measuring a total of approximately 50 km, hiking through the numerous surrounding forests discovering their rich fauna and flora, resting by the waters of Czchów Lake or the Dunajec River, crossing the Dunajec River by canoe, boat or ferry, using the ‘Croatia’ bathing site in Jurków, listening to music and dancing in one of the most prestigious music clubs in Małopolska – the Space Club, taking part in cultural, entertainment and recreational events, relaxing at recreational and leisure facilities (children’s playgrounds, sports fields, outdoor gyms, gazebos with barbecue areas), or spending time in the company of alpacas in Jaśkowy Sad. Czchów county also offers unique local products. Among them are staples of regional cuisine: dishes made from ‘Piękny Jaś’ beans, high-quality beekeeping products, and‘Pierogi spod Baszty’ made from bread dough with seeds. Czchów is also known for artistic craftsmanship, including dolls, owls, and knights made of sisal string, as well as lace doilies, lace tablecloths, and painted and embroidered pictures. The Czchów region is a true paradise for history buffs, nature lovers, water sports enthusiasts, anglers and mushroom pickers.
