Church Porch, Meeting of Cultures Centre

Ośrodek Spotkania Kultur - Babiniec II p

From 1935 to 1939, the second floor of the church porch served as a place of prayer for younger women, girls, and boys under the age of 13; earlier, it was used as storage. Currently, it is an exhibition room and a venue for classes as part of the Meeting of Cultures Centre’s educational programme. The exhibition consists of 2 main parts: a burgher drawing room with typical furnishings from the early 20th century (particularly noteworthy are an interesting polisher for parquet floors and a typewriter with Latin and Cyrillic fonts – for use in the Russian partition of Poland). Notable among the musical instruments is a biblical zither. The second part of the exhibition is a very valuable book collection of nearly 200 volumes belonging to the family of Dąbrowa’s last religious Jew, Samuel Roth (died 1995), located in the Dąbrowa shtiebel (House of Prayer) until 2012. Among the beautifully decorated old Hebrew books are prayer books, 2 volumes of the Talmud from the 19th century (published in Vienna and Lviv), and a collection of rules of conduct of the holy burial society Chevra Kadisha. In addition to these exhibits, the display case contains ethnography and archaeology collections from the Dąbrowa Powiśle Museum. In a separate display case, you can see hand-painted teacups with typical Zalipie motifs. Next to the TV is a 2018 matchstick model of the pre-war ‘Sokół’ building (1910), now the seat of the Dąbrowa Cultural Centre.
