Underground, Meeting of Cultures Centre

Ośrodek Spotkania Kultur - Podziemia Ośrodka

In the basement of the Meeting of Cultures Centre, the two exhibition rooms located in the passageway behind the blue door are a must-see. Here you can see the mechanism of the old town clock, formerly located on the town hall building, as well as the banners of political organisations operating in the Polish People’s Republic. Family heirlooms of local people of military merit also play an important role in nurturing patriotism and regionalism. An attraction for children and young people will be copies of medieval knights’ swords, artillery shell casings and a fragment of the propeller blade of a Soviet fighter, shot down over Dąbrowa on 17.01.1945 by a German aircraft on the day Dąbrowa was liberated from Nazi occupation. Here you will find a variety of historical and military memorabilia (including an interesting collection of World War II and post-war military caps), as well as a series of unique archival photographs from the premiere of S. Wyspiański’s ‘The Wedding’ in Kraków, and manuscripts by a people’s activist, a member of the Austrian parliament from the period of the partitions. Of great value to historians are the old newspapers and books owned by the Dąbrowa Powiśle Museum, as well as the emblem of the Polish coat of arms, removed after 1989 from the monument to the fallen Sons of the City of Dąbrowa in the years 1914–1918 and 1920, located in the town park (the removed eagle had no crown, and the image on the monument was restored to resemble the pre-war emblem). There is also the foundation act for the construction of this monument (original document with signatures of national and local politicians of the inter-war period). To leave the underground, it is worth walking through the underground corridor running along the exhibition halls, heading towards the glass tunnel leading into the south side of the courtyard.
