Włodzimierz Kunz was born in Dąbrowa Tarnowska on 25 July 1926 and spent his childhood and youth in Gorlice, where he attended the primary school, middle and high school. He graduated from the Faculty of Painting at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts (diploma obtained in 1954) where he has spent an entire academic career, from assistant to full professor (the title gained in 1986). He held the position of the head of the Department of Lithography, dean of the Graphics Faculty and head of the Painting Studio at the Faculty of Painting. He was elected rector of the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts three times. For many years, he held the position of the chairman for the Programme Board of the Gorlice Gallery and, as a token of appreciation, was awarded honorary citizenship in the town in 1994. Włodzimierz Kunz retired in 1996. He died in Krakow on 6 June 2002.
