Film Star Museum of Photography, Kraków

The change in portrait stylisation in the first decades of the 20th century was related to, among other things, the development of cinema and the appearance of the first film stars. The actors – or rather their creations, the fictional characters experiencing great passions – captured the popular imagination, and film photoshoots became the standard for depicting people. Both women and men emulated them for the camera. Their facial expressions became animated; they were no longer indifferent and began to express emotions. Initially, smiles predominated. Over time, scowls or sadness on the model's face became increasingly popular. The types of shots were imitated as well: in addition to close-ups of the face, there were full-length shots in graceful or dramatic poses.
