Gothic House, Nowy Sącz

Known also as the Kanoniczy House, the Gothic House was adapted in 1448 to suit the needs of canons from the St. Margaret collegiate church (currently a minor basilica) and was used by them until 1791. It is made of brick, partially buttressed, consisting of two blocks with separate roofs, a basement and a single floor. Portals and window frames come from the late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. Rebuilt between 1958 and 1964, the interiors were transformed into a museum. The Gothic House houses a permanent exhibition of old art from the Sądecczyzna region and temporary exhibition relating to history, culture and arts. The permanent exhibition is titled ‘Old Art of Sądecczyzna’ and presents themes such as ‘Religious guild art of the 14th–19th century’, ‘King’s castle in Nowy Sącz’, ‘Folk art from the 18th to early 20th century’, and ‘Court art from the 17th to 19th century’. The collection of Orthodox Church art from the 15th to 19th century with western Lemko icons is particularly worthy of attention.
