The Guild Hall (crafts hall) used to be a wedding hall, which is why one of the display cases features a court wedding dress from 150 years ago. The Hall houses a rich exhibition of Dobczyce’s crafts, the traditions of which date back to the 14th century. In the 15th and 16th centuries Dobczyce had many craftsmen’s workshops. At the foot of the castle by the Raba River there were two fulling mills and a bleachery for bleaching cloth. You can see a model of a fulling mill and learn how cloth was produced. The hall is divided into cubicles (alcoves) with different types of workshops, including tanning, tailoring, a furrier’s, and leatherworking workshops as well as a shoemaking workshop with all the tools needed by a cobbler. Of note are the large felt shoes with wooden soles, used as foot warmers by the craftsmen of the past. They were worn during wagon rides to fairs in nearby towns, where they had to stand at their stalls for several hours. The first shoemakers’ guild statute, known from a 17th century copy, dates back to 1472. In addition to the above-mentioned workshops, there are carpentry, wheelwrighting, wood-turning (for making wooden decorations) and wickerwork workshops as well as weaving and pottery workshops that are more than 100 years old.
