Court Kilim, Hipolit House, Kraków

The carpet comes from the area of present-day Ukraine and was made from wool on a flax wrap using a comb technique.. It is not known whether it was made in a factory or in a small rural workshop of the type that manufactured textiles for the nearby manors. It is characterised by a rich, contrasting colour scheme and strong geometric floral motifs. In the centre field, enclosed in a wide border are colourful vases with roses, carnations, and tulips against a black background. Woven with pink wool in the bottom right corner of the rectangular field is the date of the kilim's creation –1840.
