It is a complex of several connected chambers with unique historical and visual qualities. The chambers have a peculiar shape: narrow, vertical, soaring (this is due to the nearly vertical arrangement of deposits here); they are often called the 'underground cathedrals'.
Deposits of high-grade crystalline salt, called 'pearl salt' or 'royal salt' were exploited here from 1763 until the early 19th century. In the times of old Poland, this salt was delivered directly to the royal court; later, it sold at the highest price.
