Worn mostly by farmers, the sukmana was the most important element of men’s clothing and a sign of wealth.. It made the owner look more solemn and dignified: wide at the shoulders, slim at the waist and flared at the bottom thanks to numerous folds and creases and gores on both sides. Garments worn in the Highlands were shorter and bulkier (‘cucha’, ‘gunia’) to make it easier to move on difficult terrain. Men also wore sleeved kaftans of different types and lengths as outerwear or under the sukmana.
