Hunting Room, Niepołomice Museum

Sala łowiecka

The last room displays African trophies. Those who enter the ‘castle savannah’ are greeted by an ostrich, the largest of contemporary birds. This is where they can meet herbivores such as a giraffe, zebras, antelopes, a buffalo and a porcupine. There are scavengers: a jackal and a hyena, and a carnivorous lion. Antelope species are most numerous: from the miniature dik-dik to the largest ones in the world, such as the eland with a body weight of 300-1000 kg. Note the variety of their horns: straight, conical, twisted in a spiral, in the shape of a corkscrew, a sabre or a bent lyre. Some of them are 1.5 m long. There are the small springhare that resembles a kangaroo and the cat-like genet and civet, sought after for their glandular secretions used in the perfume industry. There is also a warthog, the hero of the Timon and Pumbaa cartoons, and Walt Disney’s Lion King. Photographs display scenes from a safari in which Jan, Count Potocki participated; his collection comprises a significant part of the exhibition. The exhibition serves primarily an educational purpose.
