The homestead dates from the first half of the 19th century and includes a residential building and an outbuilding. In the cottage is an entry hall with a separate larder in the centre, a cold room on the left, and a kitchen and a living room on the right. The cold room has been used as a space for an exhibition of the lubricant and grease trade. The residents of the village of Łosie engaged in the lubricant and smear trade (‘maziarstwo’). Initially, this was the so-called ‘kołomaź’, obtained by dry distillation of pine waste and used to lubricate the axles of wooden carts. As the oil industry developed, the residents of Łosie also began to trade in mechanical lubricants and oils derived from petroleum. This occupation was the primary source of income for almost all Łosie residents from the mid-19th century until the Second World War. There were two categories of lubricant traders: small-scale peddlers travelling on foot through the villages of the Beskids and the adjacent Podgórze with sacks on their backs, and lubricant traders travelling long distances in special carts. The gainful profession and the associated migrations brought about significant cultural changes in all areas of Łosie village life. The interior of the rest of the cottage was furnished to resemble a 1920s residence of a smear trader’s family. The furnishings of the house are, on the one hand, indicative of the wealth of the household, and on the other hand, a reflection of labour migration, as evidenced by the presence of many items of non-local origin purchased during the trader’s journeys. Above one of the beds hang photographic portraits of the owners, Ewa and Wasyl Jewusiak. The narrow room behind the kitchen is the sleeping area. There is a short bed and a sleeping space for children set up on the bread stove. The outbuilding consists of a stable, a hay room, a threshing floor, a mow (‘zapole’), a chaffing room, a woodshed, and a pigsty. On the threshing floor is a grease trader’s carriage with all the equipment necessary to engage in the trade.
