Rabsztyn Castle

Picturesque ruins of the Rabsztyn castle rise on a high limestone rock. The name originated from the German ‘Rabenstein’ or ‘Raven Rock’. The upper castle was erected in the 13th century and a stone defensive tower was built slightly later. At the end of the 14th century the castle came into the hands of the powerful Leliwita-Melsztyński family. The upper castle on top of the rock was small, so the middle castle with residential buildings, a courtyard and a gate emerged at its foot. In 1439, Spytek from Melsztyn, a bearer of the coat of arms of Leliwa, became the tenant of the castle in Rabsztyn. In 1441, the castle came into the hands of Andrzej Tęczyński, a bearer of the coat of arms of Topór. The king ordered Tęczyński to start the reconstruction and reinforcement of the castle, which was the seat of the non-city starosty. The lower castle emerged at the turn of the 15th century. This was also when the dry moat was dug. A curtain wall placed next to the rock with the entrance gates in the wall protected the castle on the north.. What the lower castle looked like is unknown because a Renaissance palace was built in its place towards the end of the 16th century. Jan Boner, the banker of King Sigismund the Old, received the Rabsztyn starost office at the beginning of the 16th century. The Boners rebuilt the castle, which became a Renaissance residence. Grand Court Marshal Mikołaj Wolski became the Rabsztyn starost in 1592. Another reconstruction began in the castle during his time. Some of the curtain walls and walls of the lower castle were demolished and a Renaissance palace whose walls we can see today was built in their place. The construction was finished by the next Rabsztyn Starost, Great Court Marshal Zygmunt Gonzaga Myszkowski. However, the splendour of Rabsztyn did not last long. In 1657, the castle was burned by Swedish invaders and fell into disrepair. Since the castle became the property of the Olkusz municipality (gmina) in 1990, wooden bridges have been built, the gates have been reconstructed and the structural protection of the walls has been completed; the reconstruction also covered the upper castle and the tower where a viewing terrace was created.
