The Open-Air Rolling Stock Museum in Chabówka has a rich collection of historical steam locomotives. Part of the exhibition consists of tank locomotives – steam locomotives that transport their supply of water and coal on board, without the need for a tender (coal car). These locomotives were characterised by a compact structure, short overall length, and the ability to move both forwards and backwards at maximum design speed. This is important, for example, on mountain routes such as the Kraków-Zakopane route, where the change of direction had to be made three times. When using tender locomotives, the speed in reverse has to be limited to 50km/h. The use of tank locomotives made it possible to lift this restriction. The presented collection consists of both passenger and freight trains. You can see the following locomotives (in order): TKh100, TKp, OKl27, TKw2 and TKt1. Each of them was brought here from a different part of Poland and saved from destruction. In addition to the tank locomotives displayed here, the Museum in Chabówka has two that are in operation: the pre-war OKz32-2 (1934) and the TKt48-191, the last one, supplied to Polish State Railways by FABLOK in Chrzanów (1958).
