Cottage from Gródek, Open-air Museum of Rural Pogórze

Chałupa z Gródka

Built in 1886, it used to be a part of a moderately prosperous peasant farm. The log walls have log ends protruding at the corners, and a three-slope roof covered with thatch is reinforced with shingles on the ridge. The cottage presents an interesting example of the traditional decoration of the corners, and the walls to the left of the entrance are decorated with large circles of lime. Inside are four rooms arranged side to side: a living room and a pantry to the left of the hallway, a kitchen to the right. An original wicker cupboard for food storage stands in the hallway. (The kitchen features temporary exhibitions.) In the living room is the exhibition titled ‘Daily Life and Holidays – Traditional Pogórze Outfits’ showing the everyday outfits worn by women and men in the Pogórze countryside as well as the more special clothes for major church and family events. A few dozen displays exhibit accessories such as petticoats, aprons and scarves from the end of the 19th century and early 20th century arrayed on life-size figures.
