‘Bell’ Chapel, Skawinki

The village of Skawinki is picturesquely situated among the hills of the Makowski Beskid, in the valley of the Cedron river. The village was founded by Casimir the Great, and the first mention of it appears in 1359. From 1443, it was part of the Lanckorona starostwo. There are deposits of sandstone around the village which have been quarried by the residents since the 17th century. A farmstead with outbuildings known as a ‘sheepfold’ was built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Above the church is the stone ‘Bell’ chapel  built in the 19th century by the locals as a place for prayer. It was named the ‘Bell’ chapel because of its distinctive onion-shaped dome. It was customary to ring the chapel’s bell to call for the ‘Angelus’ prayer, to summon residents to meetings, or to warn them in times of danger. Inside the chapel is a polychrome stone statue of Jesus collapsing under the weight of the cross.
