Strzelnica ('Shooting Range') Museum of Photography, Kraków

One of two buildings of this type built in the Zwierzyniec and Wola Justowska districts, the Strzelnica was built for the Austrian army in the second half of the 19th century;the date of the building's construction cannot be precisely determined . as The author of the architectural design was probably the general inspector of sappers in the Austro-Hungarian army, Emil Gołogórski, later a lieutenant general in the Polish Army and the commander of the General District ’Kraków’.. In 1918, the Komenda Strzelnic Granicznych i Bojowych ('Border and Combat Shooting Range Command') took possession of the Strzelnica. In 1922, the Komenda Strzelnic Granicznych i Bojowych was dissolved, after which the Wola Justowska district Strzelnica was run by the Komenda Obozu Warownego KOW ('Fortified Camp Command'). On August 5 1922, on the anniversary of the formation of the Polish Legions (Legiony Polskie), KOW held a shooting competition for the officers of the Kraków Garrison. The Strzelnica was visited by the Head of State, First Marshall of the Polish Army Józef Piłsudski. In 1923, the Strzelnica was renamed Gen. Poletier's Strzelnica Szkolna in Wola Justowska ('School Shooting Range'). At the beginning of 1928, a shooting chapter was formed in the Military Sports Club ‘Wawel’. In the 1930s, the following organisations joined the marksmanship efforts: Towarzystwo Strzeleckie Bractwa Kurkowego ('Bractwo Kurkowe Shooting Society'), Towarzystwo Gimnastyczne ‘Sokół’ ('"Sokół" Gymnastic Society'), Związek Strzelecki ('Shooting Association'), Związek Młodzieży Szkolnej Związek Strzelecki ('School Youth Association – Shooting Association'). During the interwar period and after the Second World War, the Strzelnica belonged to Kraków's garrison. In the 1990s, the buildings ownership passed to the City Municipality of Kraków (Gmina Miejska Kraków). Between 2014 and 2017, the building was rebuilt with funding from the City Municipality of Kraków and the Social Committee for the Restoration of Kraków's Monuments (Społeczny Komitet Odnowy Zabytków Krakowa). Since 2018, the Strzelnica has housed the Museum of Photography in Kraków, providing exhibitions and educational activities.
