Ethnographic Museum, Tarnów

The Museum’s exhibitions take many forms and cover a variety of topics. These include exhibitions presenting not only the traditional culture of the Tarnów region in all its manifestations, but also the cultures of various nations. There are also exhibitions which go beyond the typical scope of ethnographic exhibitions and concern people and their environment, social movements, and contemporary art. Original exhibitions by the Ethnographic Museum’s staff are also very popular. A different form of the Museum’s activity is hosting competitions aimed not only at acquiring new exhibits, but also at promoting the traditional folk culture of the region. Among these undoubtedly noteworthy is the ‘Painted Cottage Competition’ – currently the longest-running competition related to folk art in Poland, and the ‘Easter Egg and Ritual Art Competition’, regarded as the largest competition that brings together artists associated with traditional ritual art (the main organiser is the ‘Sokół’ Municipal Cultural Centre in Tarnów). The museum conducts ongoing field research to verify the condition of traditional folk culture from the Tarnów area and acquiring new objects for the museum in the process. It also takes care of the Tarnów branch of the Folk Artists Association. Educational activities are one of the Museum’s many tasks aimed at strengthening the sense of regional identity, preserving regional traditions, and promoting various forms of folk culture. Museum lessons and art workshops have been running since the Ethnographic Museum was founded.
