Ethnographic Museum, Tarnów

The exhibition ‘In Felicia Curyłowa’s Painted Cottage’ is on display at the Ethnographic Museum in Tarnów. The exhibits come from the Tarnów Museum’s own collection and from the Zalipie Museum. It is dedicated to Felicia Curyłowa, a well-known Zalipie folk artist and an important figure associated with the tradition of ‘painted cottages’ in the Dąbrowa Powiśle. The artist, who lived from 1903 to 1974, made the village of Zalipie famous through her talent and personal commitment to the idea of promoting this unique type of folk art. She devoted 50 years of her life to this, engaging in artistic and social activities. She was already active in the interwar period and developed her talent during the communist era. She practised all the art disciplines typical of the region, developing her own style, compositional arrangements, and colour palettes. She created wall paintings, patterns painted on cardboard, ceramics, and fabric, various kinds of cut-outs, embroidery and papercraft. The exhibition showcases a wide range of Felicia Curyłowa’s works from different disciplines and periods of her life. The papercrafts are mainly varied shapes of floral-pattern painted cardboard. Also noteworthy are the openwork and painted cut-outs, as well as cut-outs of the negative-positive type. The exhibition is made richer by archival materials, old photographs, and press clippings about the painter. Another example of the artist’s versatility are the elements of richly embroidered folk costumery she herself sewed (corset, apron, shirt, collars) displayed in the third exhibition room. Her designs of patterns on fabric (canvas and silk) are also interesting. The oil paintings on canvas depicting the painter were made by the well-known Tarnów painter Józef Szuszkiewicz.
