Photos of the Palace in Podhorce

Photographs of the Palace in Podhorce, a residence built for Stanisław Koniecpolski in the 17th century, are displayed in the corridor leading to the exhibition rooms. Subsequent owners were the Sobieski family, the Rzewuskis, and from 1865, the Sanguszkos. The three-storey ‘palazzo in fortezza’-type palace was built on a rectangular floor plan. It has a bastion fortification system with a moat and casemates, a courtyard, and an internal well. It was surrounded by a large park with terraces descending from the northern side. Thanks to the Rzewuskis, especially Wacław, the residence inherited from the previous owners (the Koniecpolskis and Sobieskis) along with its furnishings was enriched with new artistic collections. Just before the First World War, the palace’s interiors and vast collections inside were opened to the public. During the war, a significant part of the Podhorce collection was taken by the Sanguszkos to their palace in Gumniski near Tarnów, among other places. Only part of the collection returned to the Podhorce Palace in 1933, when the building was partially restored and put back into use.
