Hunting Armoury, Regional Museum

On display are firearms used for recreation, hunting and sport, but also for self-defence and duelling. For the most part, these are luxury products, richly decorated and of high artistic quality, reflecting the styles and tastes of the period in which they were made. Among the exhibits on display are antiques illustrating the development and evolution of European hunting through changes in the systems and designs of firearms used by hunters from the 17th to the early 20th century. The hunting armoury is dominated by long firearms dating from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. One of the most valuable exhibits is an arquebus that belonged to Hetman Klemens Branicki. Its hunting-themed decoration made of silver inspires admiration for the craftsmanship of the craftsmen-artists of the past. In addition to firearms, there are examples of other ranged weapons, represented by 3 crossbows, a weapon favoured by hunters due to its silence. The exhibition is complemented by elements of hunting equipment: beautifully decorated gunpowder containers, horns, and a duck call whistle (known as the ‘Tryton’) made from the shell of a sea snail.
