Józef Pawlak’s Homestead, Shingle Manufacture

Warsztat do wyrobu gontów z narzędziami.

A shingle producing workshop can be found in the utility building where the historical and more contemporary shingle production process can be seen. There is a ‘suka’ and a ‘dziadek’ tools for the manual processing of shingles (a bench with a special head in which a piece of wood was placed), there are also tools for planing and splitting the shingles (including an axe, a drawknife, a ‘kijań’ – a kind of a wooden hammer) and wood at various stages of its processing as well as finished shingles. One can also see auxiliary appliances for the transport of wood and shingles. To fully illustrate the historical changes in the production of shingles, the display also includes a factory workshop for the production of cut shingles with a shingle machine and a combustion engine called ‘esiok’. The entire exhibition provides an insight into the great effort that had to be made before a shingle roof could be made. A craftsman had to turn each shingle in his hands many times to add to the home budget so that this tiny piece of wood could become a part of a roof, be resistant to sunlight, wind and frost and protect a house from rain and snow for many years.
