Zagroda Maziarska, Łosie

Zagroda Maziarska

Zagroda Maziarska is a Lemko homestead in the village of Łosie, the history of which began more than 600 years ago. This fragment of the Carpathian Mountains was inhabited mostly by the Lemkos until 1947. One of the most original forms of non-agricultural gainful employment among the villagers was ‘maziarstwo’, the trade in grease and lubricants, which inhabitants of the village exported to almost all parts of Europe. Zagroda Maziarska is a traditional Lemko homestead; it abuts the early 20th century development and an active Greek Catholic church dating to 1810. An old Orthodox church wall separates the homestead from the church. The museum complex is an example of the late 19th century Lemko architecture characteristic for Łosie. The only translocated structure in the homestead is a cottage called ‘chyża’, from the village of Bartne, that was built in 1928. One hundred years ago, Łosie was the wealthiest of all Lemko villages. The entire village lies in a picturesque location on the Łosianka stream. It contains exceptionally many original buildings from the late 19th century and from the first decades of the 20th century.
