Kumora, Sabała’s Cottage, Zakopane

A kumora is an unheated chamber entered through a very low door, which was always kept closed. There were solid bars on the window because the family kept their valuables here. The kumora was the place where the commune head would store his accounts, documents and tax revenues. There were also small stairs here that led to ‘wyżka’ or a small clean attic. A kumora can be compared to the highlanders’ white chamber.
