Władysław Hasior Gallery, Zakopane

Zakopane Galeria Władysława Hasiora

The Władysław Hasior Gallery opened on the 1st of February 1985. From the start, it was a department, and later a branch, of the Tatra Museum. It is a unique place, as it contains not only an exhibition but also the apartment and studio of the artist. The building of the Gallery was designed by the Kraków architect Wacław Nowakowski and erected in 1936. It served as a lounging room for the Warszawianka Sanatorium next door. The sanatorium treated lung diseases. Behind the main exhibition is the information space, where you can see a timeline of Władysław Hasior’s work, a film about him, and a selection of photos from the photography Notebooks with the author’s comments. The other parts of the building are a temporary exhibition space and the former apartment of the artist displaying Hasior’s assemblages, early ceramic works, and his letters and notes. The temporary exhibition space also serves as an archive – all the documents left by the artist are collected here. The exhibition closes with a display of materials from Władysław Hasior’s studio. Materials used in the artist’s works are organised in the green boxes. You can also hear the artist’s own thoughts about his art and why he used certain elements to create his works. On the walls are pictures of his outdoor performances. The photos depict ephemeral events (the procession with banners celebrating the Apple Blossom Festival in Łącko, the burning piano) but also sculptures plucked from the ground (‘Pieta’ in the Louisiana Museum near Copenhagen, ‘Sun Chariot’ in Södertälje near Stockholm, ‘Sebastian’).
