Nature Exhibition, Tatra Museum

Wystawa przyrodnicza

The room is dedicated to the history of geological research in the Tatra Mountains, which began at the end of the 18th century, and to the formation of the highest mountain massif in Poland – the Tatras – and features profiles of researchers. There are also two maps: the Tatras and the Pieniny. The following display boards provide information on the formation of the Tatras: a geological map of the Tatra region, the development of the Tatras against the background of the history of the Earth, and the processes of mountain formation in the Tatras, applying the latest research from many fields of geology. The most beautiful exhibits in the Museum’s rich collection document the processes occurring in the Earth’s crust and on its surface in different geological periods. Part of the exhibition is dedicated to mining and metallurgy in the Tatras. The living organisms’ section of the exhibition presents flora and fauna of regions ranging from forested montane ecosystems, through the pines of the subalpine zone and alpine tundra, to mountain peaks. The botanical display cases contain the vascular plants, fungi, and lichens that comprise the most important plant communities of the Tatras. Animals living in the Tatras, including the mountain goats and marmots these mountains are known for, populate the dioramas depicting sections of the distinctive altitudinal zones.
