The Kornel Makuszyński Museum in Zakopane is a biographical-literary museum. It is located in the ‘Opolanka’ villa, where the Makuszyński family lived during their almost annual summer and winter stays in Zakopane. After the Second World War, they moved in permanently. Many precious items and the Makuszyńskis’ large library were destroyed in Warsaw during the Second World War. The current museum collection is just a fraction of the work of the writer, a collector of art and friend of many prominent artists. The museum was established in 1966 to display the collection donated by Janina Gluzińska-Makuszyńska (1896–1972), the writer’s widow. The museum in ‘Opolanka’ consists of four rooms of the former home of the Makuszyński family. A part of the museum’s collection consists of books: successive editions of the writer’s works, historical-literary works about his writing, and his diaries. In addition to Makuszyński’s own manuscripts, his includes an extensive collection of letters from prominent writers, painters, musicians, theatre artists, scholars, politicians, and correspondence from readers. The archive is completed by newspaper clippings and a collection of photographs.
