The Living-room, Koliba Villa, Zakopane

The living-room was decorated with Witkiewicz and Brzega’s furniture, which belongs to the same set as the sideboard and shelf in the Goral room. The upholstered chairs and the jardinière (1901), authorised by the creator of the Zakopane style, are only a part of an uncompleted project of furnishing the dining room in Henryk Sienkiewicz’s manor in Oblęgorek. The table and clock were probably also designed by Witkiewicz. The bench, table, and two armchairs with backrests modelled after sledges were made by Wojciech Brzega. Above the table hangs a Zakopane-style oil lamp designed by Józef Gardecki and manufactured in Jan Serkowski’s company in Warsaw. The most valuable example of applied art designed by Stanisław Witkiewicz is the black coffee set for six, made of oxidised silver. The cups shaped like scoops (‘czerpak’) and teaspoons shaped like shepherds’ long wooden spoons (‘warzęcha’) were made by the rich Kraków jeweller Wojciechowski. One of the oldest objects in the living-room is the console table (1895) by the front door, made by Wojciech Gąsienica. The brass candle holder on the console table is of unknown origin; it resembles the one on the bedside table in the bedroom.
