Zązel Cottage, Shoemaker and Wojok

Oleodruk przedstawiający żołnierza stojącego na tle jeziora i miejscowości.

The ‘bezsiyńizba’ contains an improvised workshop and a handyman’s storeroom. One can find a variety of equipment here ranging from small household appliances to clocks, musical instruments and a bookbinding press. A chromolithograph on the wall is worth noting. It depicts a soldier from the Austro-Hungarian army, wearing the Honved uniform with a navy blue shirt with a belt at the side of which is a bayonet. There are loop appliqués and side-sewn cords along the entire length of the trousers. This uniform looks similar to the Orawa folk costume, which was often inspired by a military uniform. The upper part of the chromolithograph depicts the crown of Saint Stephen, which is a symbol of the Kingdom of Hungary, and below it, among others, the figure of Franz Joseph, the King and Emperor. An interesting fact is that a photograph of the chromolithograph’s owner cut to measure has been inserted, replacing the soldier’s head. Such memorabilia used to be common in cottages of Orawa because Upper Orawa belonged to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy before World War I and the military service was obligatory for this social group.
