Smithy, Museum – Orawa Ethnographic Park

Drewniana kuźnia stojąca wśród drzew.

It was relocated to the open-air museum from Zubrzyca Górna in 1968. Its roof has a large canopy over the entrance, which made it possible to do some work outside even during the rain or in hot weather, especially as it was usually quite dark and cramped inside this small building. Such cramped conditions made it easier to assess the degree of heating of the raw material to be processed so that it could be shaped appropriately. They made it easier to reach and maintain the right temperature. A stove with large leather bellows stands inside. There are also all the tools necessary to a blacksmith: hammers, pincers, cutters, drills, punches, sharpening stones and anvils as well as various products such as horseshoes, ploughshares, fittings and other objects. A smithy was a very important part of a historical village. This small building was often bustling with activity for, in addition to shoeing horses and making horseshoes, the blacksmith made and repaired iron parts for tools, carts, fittings, hoops, hinges, locks, hunting equipment and many other items required on a farm. What is more, a smithy could be located on the outskirts but remained the centre of social life of the village. It was not uncommon for ‘gazdas’ to meet there and exchange views, asking the blacksmith for advice on various matters. The smith was one of the best informed people in the area and usually enjoyed widespread respect although the nature of his work might have been associated with unpleasant things, not only among those with a toothache…
