plac Jana Matejki, 30-001 Kraków Tourist region: Kraków i okolice

This is a beautiful route leading along the main and most historic streets in the very heart of Kraków, which commemorates the route of former royal entries, funeral processions and marches.

The route starts at Matejko Square and leads through the most significant places in Kraków: Floriańska Gate and the Main Market Square, up to the Wawel Royal Castle. Walking along the route in Floriańska Street, we pass the House of Jan Matejko, painter and creator of historical paintings, or the café and cabaret "Jama Michalika". Continuing the walk, we reach the Market Square with St Mary's Basilica on the left and the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) on the right. Further on, from the Romanesque St Adalbert's Church, the route leads along Grodzka Street, with the Gothic monastery complexes of the Dominicans and Franciscans, St Andrew's Church, with a preserved Romanesque block, and the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. It is worth turning into the charming Kanoniczna Street, from where you can admire the stunning view of Wawel Hill with the castle and cathedral. This most impressive of Kraków's monuments, the Renaissance royal castle, invites visitors to its beautiful courtyard and magnificent interiors, where precious works of art are displayed. The chambers present, among others, famous tapestries from a unique collection originating from Flanders. Make sure to visit the cathedral, the royal necropolis where national heroes, such as Tadeusz Kościuszko, a commander and military engineer, or Marshal Józef Piłsudski, a Polish social and independence activist, are buried in its crypts. If you are persistent, you can make the effort to climb the bell tower and take a closer look at the most famous of bells in Poland - the Sigismund Bell. While spending time in Kraków, regardless of the weather, you should take a walk along the Royal Route and discover interesting places related to the history of Poland.
