In 1939, Schindler took over the bankrupt company “Rekord” in Zabłocie. He changed the name of the factory, which henceforth became Deutsche Emailwarenfabrik – DEF, and immediately began to expand it. First, enamelware was produced in Email, and later the company expanded and established an armaments production department, where they made canteens for the Wehrmacht, cartridge cases and fuses for artillery and airborne shells – all so that the factory could survive. At the beginning, Schindler employed Poles, but with time he employed more and more Jews that were threatened with extermination. They were the ones that the world would come to know as those on the so-called Schindler's List and thus saved from extermination.  Since June 2010, a branch the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow has been operating here on the premises of the factory, in which the exhibition “Krakow – a time of occupation 1939-1945” is presented. It is a story about the fate of the city and its inhabitants, as well as about the Nazi occupiers. The modern arrangement of the exhibition goes beyond the framework of a traditional museum exhibition and has the character of a theatre and film story.
