The Polish Tatra Society (PTT) is an organisation with a clear mission: to popularise mountain tourism and protect nature. For many years, it has been bringing together mountain enthusiasts. Operating continuously since its reactivation in 1981, PTT continues the traditions of the Tatra Society, which was founded in 1873 and renamed the Polish Tatra Society in 1922.
PTT has over 3,000 members in 55 branches, associations, and school circles operating throughout Poland. The organisation relies solely on the voluntary work of its members and supporters, which gives its activities a unique grassroots character. PTT members are not only lovers of mountain hiking but also promote mountain knowledge and nature conservation.
One of the Society's main objectives is to promote individual tourism, both summer and winter, practised in small groups, allowing a fuller and more conscious communion with nature. The PTT places great emphasis on the development of skiing, including alpine skiing and mountaineering. The organisation understands the importance of educating the younger generation of hikers–the Society believes they will be best placed to protect the mountains from destruction.
PTT branches extend their activities well beyond the Polish mountains. Throughout the year, they organise trips and expeditions to mountains all over the world, opening up the opportunity for their members to explore the most diverse corners of the globe. Training sessions, lectures, slide shows and films are regularly held at branch locations to enrich participants' knowledge and deepen their passion for the mountains. Mountain knowledge competitions are also organised to popularise knowledge of mountain regions and their history.
Prof. Feliks Rapf of the Beskid Branch runs a guide club, a cross-country section and an alpine section. These units bring together people with a wide range of interests, from mountain guiding to more extreme forms of mountain activity such as high altitude climbing.
Every year, PTT organises nationwide meetings and Mountain Days, which provide an opportunity to exchange experiences, integrate the mountain community and expand knowledge and skills related to mountain tourism and nature conservation. Through these activities, the Polish Tatra Society not only nurtures the traditions of Polish mountain tourism but also shapes new generations of tourists who will approach the natural heritage of the mountains with respect and responsibility.
