Saint Florian (250–304), a Roman officer in one of the legiopes and a martyr, killed on the ground in present-day Austria for having spoken out in favor of Christian soldiers, persecuted in the Roman army. In the year 1184, due to the efforts of Prince Kazimierz Sprawiedliwy, his relics were brought to Poland and placed in the church in Krakow, purpose-built (currently in Chorzów). São Floriano is patron of firefighters (in the year 1528 he supposedly saved “his” church during the fire in Kraków) and other professions related to fire, among others of metallurgists. Remembered on May 4th.
