The patron saint of Poland, Hedwig [Jadwiga in Polish] of Anjou (1374–99) was the daughter of King Louis I of Hungary. She was crowned as King of Poland and then married the Grand Duke Wladyslaw Jagiello of Lithuania, who was baptized together with the entire Lithuania for the occasion. This is how Hedwig contributed to the Christianization of the last pagan country in Europe. She founded numerous churches and restored the Krakow Academy. She was canonized in 1997 by Pope John Paul II and is remembered on June 8.
