Obraz przedstawiający wizerunek św. Szczepana ze Szczepanowa
The patron saint of Poland was Bishop of Krakow (1030–79). He was murdered at the order of King Boleslaw the Bold on Skałka. Buried in the Wawel Cathedral, he was canonized in 1253 and his feast day falls on May 8. A ceremonious procession walks from the Wawel Cathedral to Skałka on the first Sunday after May 8. The saint’s sanctuary is also located in Szczepanów where, according to tradition, he was born.
