What has been the path of the Roma, who, due to seemingly perpetual travel, refer to themselves as citizens of the world? How were they perceived? What was the dialogue between cultures, traditions, and language? The Centre for Roma History and Culture in Oświęcim can answer these questions through its exhibits and educational and social activities.

The Centre for Roma History and Culture in Oświęcim was established at the end of January 2024. A historic moment then occurred, as the unit became the first and only public cultural institution to preserve the tangible and intangible heritage of the Roma minority in Poland. The new institution will nurture and disseminate knowledge about Roma culture, tradition and history, including the painful Roma Holocaust. In addition, tolerance, cultural awareness, and the creation of a multicultural space for conversation, learning and discussion will be among the core values promoted by the Centre.

Permanent exhibitions are on display at the Centre for Roma History and Culture in Oświęcim. The exhibition 'Roma – History and Culture' depicts the vicissitudes of the fate of the Roma. The exhibition draws attention to the Roma's theme of wandering and their contact with other people. The second exhibition available is 'Permeating Culture. Roma Past and Present', which addresses minority cultural issues, human rights, tolerance and anti-discrimination.

The creation of the Roma History and Culture Centre in Oświęcim was initiated by the Association of Roma in Poland, founded in 1992. It has set itself the goal of creating conditions for the full participation of the Roma in the life of the Polish nation, of which they feel themselves citizens, despite their own specific identity. In addition to its activities to improve the social, economic and cultural situation of the Roma, it also aims to commemorate the Third Reich’s genocidal attempt to exterminate the Roma. These activities are carried out through large-scale scientific and publishing activities and organising celebrations and exhibitions. Within the structures of the Association is the Roma Historical Institute, the only such institution in Poland that is a scientific research institution.
