Two cemeteries are a reminder of the centuries-old presence of the Jewish population in Olkusz. The oldest matzevah found there dates back to the 17th century.
The first mention of Jewish presence in Olkusz is from 1317. However, the oldest information about a Jewish cemetery in Olkusz dates to only 1584. Older information hasn't been found. The cemetery was located in the Slavkov suburb, i.e., at today's Kolorowa Street. During the Second World War, the cemetery was destroyed by the Germans, who dug an anti-tank ditch through the middle of it, and most of the historic tombstones were taken away. The cemetery was cleaned up a dozen or so years ago, thanks to the efforts of the Olkusz authorities. The dozens of surviving gravestones have been arranged in several rows. An information board with the history of the necropolis has also been set up. The second Jewish cemetery in Olkusz is located at Jana Kantego Street. It was laid out in the early 20th century and was destroyed during the occupation and in the aftermath of the war. Today, there are around two hundred surviving gravestones and headstone fragments. In recent years, thanks to the efforts of the Olkusz authorities, some of them have been restored, and the cemetery has been fenced. An information board with the history and a plan of the necropolis has been set up in front of the entrance, marking the surviving gravestones.
