It is an absolutely unique place. It sounds unbelievable, but hiking in the mountains means moving across the bottom of the prehistoric Tethys Ocean. About 25 million years ago, in the Miocene, mountain ranges were uplifted due to the convergence of the tectonic plates building Africa and Asia. Former maritime settlements now form mountains.
Look for this unique place in the western part of the Pieniny Rocky Mountain Range, near the villages of Rogoźnik and Maruszyna. At 2.8 hectares, not isn’t hue huge, but for geologists and lovers of the structure and history of the Earth, it is of exceptional importance. On top of that, it's a beautiful place to relax. The inanimate nature reserve was created in a former quarry to protect the multicoloured limestone rocks, which date from different geological periods. Most are from the Upper Jurassic period, which is about 170 million years ago. From afar, visitors can admire the red rocks, which took their colour from the mussels, brachiopods, ammonites and other animal species that inhabited the warm sea in the area of today's Podhale millions of years ago. The reserve consists of three parts: Rogoźnicka Rock, the East Quarry and the West Quarry.
