Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz Theatre Zakopane
ul. Chramcówki 15, 34-500 Zakopane
One of the ideas of the Theatre is to discover and refer to the very valuable cultural heritage of Zakopane and to provide an opportunity to experience the metaphysical feeling of “strangeness of existence” through theatre. Even the seat of the Theatre - the former Water Treatment Facility of Doctor Andrzej Chramiec - in the times of its glory in the first half of the 20th century was the place of meetings for the intellectual and artistic elite.
Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (1885–1939), better known under his pseudonym Witkacy, was a famous writer, playwright, painter, photographer and philosopher, who worked during the inter-war period and part of his life was closely connected with Zakopane. This versatile artist is impossible to classify while his works are ahead of his time. Often considered a scandalmonger, he lived in solitude, misunderstood; he initiated the artistic avant-garde in Poland.
Better to end in beautiful madness than in grey, boring banality and stagnation.
