The water tower at the railway station in Nowy Targ is one of the last few monuments of early 20th century engineering design that has survived to the present day.

In 1899 the railway line to Zakopane was opened in 1899 and in 1904 one was opened to Sucha Góra. A steam locomotive depot, a water tower, and a water crane were built as the main elements of the technical complexes of equipment that make up the water stations serving the steam locomotives in Nowy Targ.  The line began to be decommissioned in 1987. First, the passenger trains to Nowy Targ were suspended, then the line to Podczerwony was decommissioned, and the cycle path of the Route Around the Tatra Mountains from Nowy Targ to Sucha Góra replaced the rails atop the railroad embankment.

The original fittings inside the water tower have been preserved, and the water tower itself, which stands next to the railway station, was carefully restored in 2018. Atop the water tower is a riveted steel water tank with a capacity of 50 cubic metres.  The façade of the tank features a water level gauge. An exhibition depicting the history of the now defunct railway line has been set up in the rooms. Art exhibitions are also held, and the Municipal Cultural Centre is based here.
