The complex of shelters Podokólne Clearing near Jurgów
34-532 Jurgów
Tourist region: Pieniny i Spisz
The buildings were moved to their present location after 1879 from about 90 clearings in the Javorníky Tatras, which was connected with the loss of pastures and sheep grazing by Jurgów inhabitants. In the areas mentioned, Prince Christian Hohenlohe established a hunting area. Around 100 huts were then moved to the Podokólne Glade. Later, new ones were erected on the same site in Podokólne. This created the largest summer village in the Tatra Mountains and the Podtatrze region, inhabited in the warm season from spring to autumn. It was still in operation in the last quarter of the 20th century.
The wooden shelters are situated in four rows. They are set on a rectangular plan, covered by high, gabled roofs with laths. Single-space, with a door in the centre axis of the front wall. The wooden shelters were built in a log structure.
Today, the shelter complex consists of 56 structures. The preserved huts are a valuable monument to a vanishing pastoral material culture. As such, they belong to the The Wooden Architecture Route(a description of the Wooden Architecture Route)
Polana Podokólne is located in the valley of the Javorowy Creek, about 2 kilometres from the centre of Jurgów. Across the road, opposite the Podokólne Glade, is the lower ski lift station and car park.
