Babiogórski Station Zawoja

Piętrowy murowano-drewniany budynek Dworca Babiogórskiego w Zawoji z trójarkadowym podcieniem na parterze i zadaszonym balkonem na piętrze.

Zawoja 129, 34-222 Zawoja Tourist region: Beskid Żywiecki i Orawa

The first-ever such station in the Mt Babia region, the now-defunct Station Zawoja was built on the initiative of members of the Mt Babia Branch of the Tatra Society. The building, commonly referred to as the Mt Babia Railway Station, was opened in the centre of Zawoja in the early 20th century thanks to Edward Wolski, an entrepreneur from Kraków and a member of the Tatra Society.

In the two-storey brick-and-wood building, Edward Wolski initially opened a shop, guest rooms and an eatery, while in 1905, a tourist station of the Tatra Society was opened there. The Tatra Society was a tourist organisation whose main aim was to encourage the exploration of the Carpathian Mountains, and in particular the Tatras i Pieniny, spreading awareness and information  about them, promoting the protection of nature and supporting the mountain tourism industry. It is worth mentioning that a year after the tourist station in Zawoja was opened, the first Mt Babia trail from Sucha to Zawoja was laid out.

The building is located in the very centre of Zawoja, opposite the Church of St Clement the Pope and Martyr. The red tin-roofed building, with a three-bay arcade on the ground floor and a covered balcony on the ground floor, blends perfectly into the picturesque setting of the Beskid Mountains.

The building housed the municipal office for many years after the Second World War. Now, it is owned by the Land and Forestry Community of Entitled Persons in Zawoja.
